Nettie Voris filed for a divorce against James on July 9, 1913 in Buffalo, Harper County, District Court of the 19th Judicial District of Harper County under case number 458. According to the divorce petition, James abandoned Nettie and Lee Roy on October 27, 1911 and they had no contact with him afterwards. Also stated that James had entered into a "pretended" marriage with Blanche McCanless on October 14, 1912 even though he and Nettie were still married. Also alleges he had committed many adulterous acts. Papers said he was a Railroad Brakeman. A Summons was issued on July 9, 1913 for James to appear on August 2, 1913 to defend himself in Court. On July 12, 1913 the Summons was returned as James could not be found in Harper County. In an affidavit, Nettie indicated that Blanche McCanless, going by the name Blanche Voris, had stated that James was in Wichita, Kansas. A Summons by publication was run three times in the Buffalo Bugle, in August, 1913. On December 12, 1913, an Order of Divorce was issued, to be in effect six months from that date [June 12, 1914]. Nettie was given custody of Lee Roy Voris and Nettie had to pay the costs of the court.

November 21, 2003, Letter from Department of Health and Environment, Kansas. No death record between 1912 and 1916 in Kansas or in any of the counties in Kansas. They state that it has been their experience that even though an event has occurred in Kansas, it may not have been recorded in their office.

Draft registration Card, September 4, 1918, shows James Merle Voris, age 32, born February 26, 1886, living in Spencer, Clay County, Iowa. He is an unemployed machinist. Closest relative is C. W. Voris living in Buffalo, OK. He is medium height, medium build, brown eyes, and black hair.

According to the indexed records of Riverside Cemetery, Spencer, Iowa, there is a James Melvill Voris buried there, 1886-1923. May be a transcript error. Need to check this out since Clay County also shows a James M. Voris, died 1923.
